This pair of decorative carvings are thought to be from the 1840s and once formed the sides of an overmantel mirror. Originally gilded, they were thickly overpainted sometime during the next hundred years. We have removed the paint by non caustic stripping and have revealed the lovely quality of the carvings which were obviously made by a master craftsman. The design features, pomegranates, roses and gentians. ( All highly symbolic plants within the Victorian language of flowers). There are a few small areas of damage, and vestiges of old paint that could be picked out by a patient person.
Possible future use could be as embellishment to a piece of furniture, door case or mirror frame or as decorative jambs to a small fireplace. The last of the photos shows the rear with recess on inside edges.
Each piece is 92 cm high x 7 cm wide
