|Bath Preservation Trust.
When the Restoration of Beckford's Tower was approaching completion, I was asked by Bath Preservation Trust to replicate the covering on the central column drum of the Belvidere as shown in an historical water colour of 1844.
I painted a marble effect onto a specially made oil cloth and then pinned it into position after some careful knife work, because the drum was anything but round or straight. The pictures show me varnishing the finished work after that fitting, and the nineteenth century water colour by Willes Maddox of the interior as it was in Beckford's later life.
The monument and museum is open to the public at weekends and well worth a visit especially if one climbs the incredible spiral stair case of the tower to enjoy spectacular panoramic views.
