Ceiling mural of a sky. Ceiling mural of a sky.

Private Client
A large domed ceiling painted with a sunrise in 1996. There are many ways to paint a sky and for this interior, within a classical building, the clouds and sky are represented after the style of Claude Lorraine.

The faux sienna marble slips in the fireplace are also by Jane.

Sky Mural Restoration After Water Damage Sky Mural Restoration After Water Damage
I painted this large mural within a domed ceiling in 1996. In recent years rain leaked through the roof above. causing stains. After the roof had been repaired and completley dried out, I was invited to restore the damage.
The restoration was completed in July 2011.

The Chapel Floor at Audley End , Essex. The Chapel Floor at Audley End , Essex.
Client English Heritage

Handmade and painted by Jane Knapp, this replica of an eighteenth century floorcloth is patterned with faux "Bremen" and limestone paving squares.
House inventories and an early watercolour record such a painted cloth for the first floor gothick chapel which could not support the wieght of a real stone floor.

Griffin Oilcloth Griffin Oilcloth

I designed, made and painted this floorcloth or "oilcloth" for use as a practical hall runner. I was mad about griffins after seeing them everywhere on a trip to the Cyclades. Such canvas cloths were popular floor coverings in the eighteenth century.

Faux "oak panelling" detail Faux "oak panelling" detail

Hand painted by Jane Knapp, this trompe l'oeil panelling covers a 15 feet long wall that has first been prepared with lining paper.
Many different wood grain effects can be acheived by oil paint and glazes.

Example of Jane's Mahogany graining Example of Jane's Mahogany graining
Sample of mahogany graining for shutters and other joinery at Hoare's Bank, Fleet Street, as part of an extensive restoration project. The effect acheived by building several layers of oil glazes with sable brushes.

"Magnolia" Mural by Jane Knapp "Magnolia" Mural by Jane Knapp
Detail of a bedroom mural . The limited colour pallet gives a very restfull effect. The design is influenced by the Oriental hand painted wallpaper I saw on a visit to Belvoir Castle.
I think it would also work very well in a dining room or library, perhaps with a different background colour.

Beckford's Tower, marble paint effect Beckford's Tower, marble paint effect
Marbled oilcloth covering in the tower, which stands on Landsdown, Bath.
A restoration project has rescued this wonderful building for many to enjoy and it is now open to the public.
The rich colours of the "Belvidere" are as they were in 1844 and copied from a watercolour recording the interior by Willes Maddox.
Oilcloth made and painted by Jane who is seen here varnishing the work.

Mural for a pool house copied from the palace of Knossos on Crete.(c.1400 BC)
The turquoise colour looks beautiful with the swimming pool and the mural exudes the minoan culture's joie de vivre.

This detail of Griffins among stylized flowers is copied from frescos found in the throne room of the palace .The dolphins are from the Queen's bathroom.

Man at a window Man at a window
Many windows were blocked up in Georgian England, including this one in Bath, to avoid the window tax.
The ghostly figure represents a man looking down from the top floor in period 18th century costume.
He wears a cap and night gown. I painted this in rather inclement weather from scaffolding for the amusement of a private client. .

"Dragged" paint effect. "Dragged" paint effect.

Flat water-based colour created and mixed to suit a family's regency hall and stairway .. I was after a happy colour that would "sing".. The corners of the door frames I gilded to add a bit of dash to the neutral painted joinery and radiator.

Gilded Gesso Moulding Gilded Gesso Moulding
One of many late Georgian mouldings that I repaired and gilded prior to them being pinned back on a restored ceiling.
